Mario must either go around Bowser and hit the switch, which collapses the bridge, or defeat him with fireballs. The fight is very similar to the ones from Super Mario Bros., as the fight takes place on a small bridge above a pit of lava, with a skull switch (which replaces the axe from Super Mario Bros.) at one end. The boss door at the end of the area leads to Bowser, the boss of the first world. Before making it to the boss's door, Mario can jump on the last tightrope to find a hidden Warp Pipe to get to a room with the final Star Coin. The second Star Coin can be found on a moving platform that sinks into lava. Mario then must get through a second lava-filled area. The first Star Coin can be found in one of the gaps, and Mario must Wall Jump to reach it. Mario must wait in the gaps between the spiked ceilings to avoid getting crushed. Eventually, Mario comes to a ground platform found below a ceiling of spikes that slowly moves up and down. There are also several platforms that move up and down, some of which sink into the lava. Along the way, Mario encounters Lava Bubbles and Dry Bones. Leap off the platform and over Bowser's head to stomp on the skull switch and collapse the bridge. The majority of the level consists of walking on tightropes over lava. Otherwise, hop onto the floating platform to the left and wait for it to rise to the top of the screen. If you've got Fire Mario, you can simply unload a mess of fireballs to quickly take down the enemy. You'll be transported to a room with the last Star Coin.Īfter pushing your way through the castle, you'll face off against the boss Bowser. Let the rope stretch all the way down, then jump straight up while holding UP on the controls to enter a hidden pipe. Jump onto the second, longer rope and move to about the center. Immediately after grabbing the second star is a set of two tightropes. Quickly jump onto the stone platform to grab the coin, then hop onto the nearby tightrope for safety. Wait on the platform to the left of the coin and a small stone will rise up under the Star Coin. The second Star Coin is just a bit past the first one, hovering over a pool of lava. Stand beneath the coin while the spiked stones drop and wall jump between the stones to reach the Star Coin. A little over halfway through the castle you'll see the first Star Coin in a narrow column between two spiked stones.
